How a fifteen-year-old redesigned reading
Braille came out of a military code for reading messages in the dark. The story explains several of its quirks.
Night writing
Charles Barbier developed a tactile code so soldiers could read orders in darkness without a lamp. It used twelve dots per cell — too many to feel in a single fingertip contact, which made it slow and largely impractical.
Halving the cell
Louis Braille, blind from a childhood accident and studying at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris, cut the cell to six dots so that one fingertip could take in a whole character at once. He was fifteen. That single decision is why braille works and night writing did not.
The French inheritance
Braille designed the code for French, and the alphabet's structure still shows it. The first ten letters use only the top four dots; the next ten add dot 3; the next add dots 3 and 6. The letter w breaks the pattern entirely because French had no w at the time and it had to be added later.
Standardisation took much longer
Competing tactile codes persisted for decades, and English-speaking countries used incompatible systems well into the twentieth century. Unified English Braille, the standard this site follows, was adopted across the major English-speaking countries between 2012 and 2016 — recently enough that older reference material may not match.
